When I arrived at the coordinates, I found a historical marker:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1260\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paleotechnologist.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/CIMG3333.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1260\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1260 \" title=\"BINAC historical marker\" src=\"https:\/\/www.paleotechnologist.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/CIMG3333_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BINAC -- possibly the world&#39;s first true computer -- was built here! (Click for larger.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BINAC\" target=\"_blank\">BINAC<\/a>, the world&#8217;s first &#8220;commercial, electronic, stored-program, digital computer&#8221; was built and tested here in North Philadelphia. (Its inventors, Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, were also the creators of ENIAC, at the nearby University of Pennsylvania.)<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a lot of qualifiers for a historical marker, but nearly <em>everything<\/em> that would even remotely be called a &#8220;computer&#8221; these days is an &#8220;electronic, digital, stored-program computer.&#8221; The vast majority of them also happen to be commercial.
